Habitat to kick off build season October 1

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne (Habitat GFW) will gather with community members, volunteers, sponsors and staff at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, to mark the start of its first four-home build season in Huntington County.

The press conference will take place at 1049 Iowa Street in Huntington, where construction will resume immediately afterward on a Triumph floorplan home. The one-story home will include three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and 1,131 square feet. Gerdau volunteers will be on site to help with the work.

During the 2026-27 build season, Habitat GFW will build four homes throughout Huntington County: their plans call for a Triumph floorplan home at 1049 Iowa Street, Huntington; two two-story Charlotte floorplan homes at 1582 and 1590 Jessup Street, Huntington; and a one-story Victory floorplan home at 385 W. Logan Street in Markle.

“Our community is full of people who care about one another and show up when help is needed,” said Jack Barlow, Habitat GFW Area Director. “Building four homes in one season is an exciting step for our county because it means four more families will have the chance to put down roots and build a more stable future. We are so grateful for every volunteer, donor, sponsor and partner who is helping make this possible, thank you.”

A Place to Call Home:

Future Habitat Homeowners Zac and Amanda are raising two young daughters and currently rent an apartment. Because both grew up moving from place to place, they look forward to giving their girls the stability, space and lasting sense of home they did not always have growing up.

“We will never have to worry about rent going up,” Amanda shared. “There will always be a place for our daughters to grow up in and come home to.”
