Residents of Huntington County and surrounding areas who want to expand their gardening knowledge will have an opportunity this spring. Purdue Extension will offer a Master Gardener Basic Training Course on Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon, beginning February 27 and continuing through June 5.
This year’s program is presented in partnership with Miami and Wabash County Extension offices. Class sessions will rotate among several locations, including the Salamonie Interpretive Center, Asherwood Nature Preserve, and the Miami and Huntington County Fairgrounds, among others.
The Master Gardener program strengthens participants’ understanding of home horticulture while preparing them to support Purdue Extension’s educational outreach. After completing the training, participants become Master Gardener interns and are encouraged to share research-based gardening information in their communities. With additional volunteer service, interns can earn full Master Gardener certification.
Course topics may include soil health and plant nutrition, plant science, diagnosing plant diseases, identifying and managing insects and weeds, landscape ornamentals, lawn care, plant propagation, annuals and perennials, and pesticide safety and alternatives. Instruction will be provided by Purdue Extension specialists, Extension educators, experienced Master Gardeners, and local horticulture professionals.
Those interested in registering should contact the Purdue Extension Huntington County office at 1340 S. Jefferson Street, call (260) 358-4826, or email emfarris@purdue.edu. Pre-registration is required. The registration deadline is February 13. The fee is $175 per person; couples may register together for $250 if they choose to share a manual.
