Learn more about suicide September 15, 19

Suicide is the #1 most preventable cause of death for all ages therefore suicide prevention cannot be limited to only the month of September. Suicide does not discriminate, however there are groups that have a higher rate based on data. There are often warning signs, but people don’t realize them until after the person dies. There are also risk factors that if people were aware of them, it may help prevent the suicide.

General Information:

Higher risk populations:

• Those struggling with mental health and/or substance abuse disorders
• Veterans and First Responders (law enforcement, fireman, EMT’s etc.)
• Elderly or those living in isolation
• LGBTQ population
• But everyone, in the right situation, may be at risk!

Warning Signs:

• Talking or drawing about death
• Giving away prized possessions
• Saying comments like “You won’t have to worry about me much longer” or “they would be better off without me,” etc.

Risk Factors may include:

• Recent divorce, forced move, loss of a job
• Close family/friend death especially due to suicide
• Increased medical concerns or legal issues
• A feeling of helplessness and/or hopelessness

Huntington County is very fortunate to have a community that is willing to talk about suicide and mental health. The community offers various opportunities to learn about suicide prevention through QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) classes, or “It Takes us All” an introduction to suicide prevention classes and Lifelines at the middle school students.

There are two community events being held in September this year. First, on Tuesday September 15 at 6 p.m. doors open at 5:30 p.m. at the Huntington North High School Auditorium there will be a community conversation on suicide and mental health. Valuable information and community resources will be provided. Then on Saturday September 19 the 15th Annual Walk for Hope will be held at the multipurpose track at Huntington North High School at 6 p.m., gates open at 5:30 p.m. A joint Proclamation will be signed Tuesday September 8 at 11:30 a.m. in the Courthouse Rotunda.
