The Community Foundation of Huntington County is inviting residents, businesses, and community supporters to help bring a transformational downtown project to life through public donations.
The Riverfront Reimagined project is made possible by a $4.8 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. and will redevelop the riverfront area near the intersection of State and Warren streets, just north of the Little River, into a vibrant public gathering space. While construction is fully funded by the grant, the Community Foundation is seeking additional community support to help accelerate the project timeline.
Earlier this month, the foundation unveiled conceptual renderings showcasing plans for an enhanced riverfront featuring scenic overlooks, community seating, a pedestrian promenade, and flexible green space designed for public events and everyday enjoyment.
The new riverfront will provide residents and visitors with a welcoming destination to gather, relax, and experience downtown Huntington in a new way. The project is also expected to increase downtown activity, support local businesses, and encourage future private investment.
“This project highlights the importance of community engagement,” said Community Foundation executive director Matt Ditzler. “The ideas residents shared during the Downtown Master Plan process directly influenced the strength of the grant proposal, the final project selection, and the design priorities now moving forward.”
The Community Foundation emphasized that no taxpayer dollars are being used to fund construction of the project. Once completed, the enhanced riverfront will be free and open for everyone to enjoy.
Groundbreaking is anticipated in 2027, with project completion expected in 2028.
Community members interested in supporting the Riverfront Reimagined project through a donation are encouraged to contact the Community Foundation of Huntington County or visit its website for more information.
