Moving in recently to their spacious three-bedroom villa at Heritage Pointe of Warren, Ken and Barbie – aka Ken and Barbara Thompson – have finally found their ‘dream house’ (albeit not in Malibu) in the premier senior living community.
The couple are newcomers to Heritage Pointe, settling in and getting to know the community and their neighbors.
After 41 years of marriage, they are long used to comments and gentle jokes about their first names that mimic those of the iconic Mattel dolls – and they don’t mind them.
“I used to have a convertible, but it wasn’t pink,” jokes Barbara.
Comments about our names “make us smile,” adds Ken. “We like making people smile.”
The Thompsons were able to share input for upgrades being made to their villa, resulting in their dream house.
“It’s beautiful,” Barbara says.
“Everybody has the freedom to adjust their homes,” Ken says. “Everybody can put their own touches into the homes to suit their individual tastes.”
A major attraction of their new villa is its expansive view of the outdoors.
“We have seven windows that join together to give us a view of a pond and fountain at the back of our house,” Ken says.
Within days of them moving in, Barbara says other residents were stopping by to invite them to take advantage of the many activities and amenities that Heritage Pointe of Warren offers, including a 9-hole golf course, a swimming pool and fitness center, wood-working shop, craft space and upscale dining room.
“People stop by and invite us to events,” Barbara says. “The community is so welcoming.”
The couple are both 66-years-old. Ken is a pastor, and Barbara is an administrative assistant to a CEO.
As part of his work, Ken has visited many retirement communities, which has provided him with a unique perspective and appreciation for the quality of life and features that Heritage Pointe of Warren provides.
“Heritage Pointe of Warren has a sterling reputation,” Ken says.
The community is built on a foundation of faith. It welcomes residents of different beliefs and provides for their spiritual needs as they desire.
Because the couple is still very much involved in their own home church, they do not immediately anticipate tapping into the community’s spiritual offerings. Still, they are happy that they are available to their fellow residents.
The Thompsons say their journey to Heritage Pointe began when they attended an open house to learn more about the community. They were thrilled when a villa became available to them shortly after their visit.
“We believe God was opening a door for us,” Ken says. “That door stayed open, so we decided to proceed through it.”
They plan to take full advantage of everything the community offers. They feel a sense of comfort knowing that, as part of a continuing care community offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation, and skilled nursing, their needs will be addressed if their health changes in the future.
“We are looking to spending many happy years here,” Ken says.
