There’s never a dull moment in Huntington County. The area’s natural beauty offers a wealth of recreational opportunities. Organized sports leagues provide athletic competition for individuals of all ages. Diverse community festivals and celebrations fill every season. Contact the Visitor and Convention Bureau for a schedule of events.

Two large reservoirs are situated on the county’s south side. Salamonie Reservoir and J. Edward Roush Lake are state recreation areas offering family camping and miles of trails for hiking and biking in summer and cross country skiing and snowmobiling in winter. Both reservoirs provide swimming beaches, fishing, boating, water skiing, and other water sports. Salamonie Reservoir features bridle trails and an equestrian campground. A well-staffed nature center is open year-round. Roush Lake amenities include a shooting range and a flight site for radio controlled model airplanes and gliders.

Huntington University's Thornhill Nature Preserve is the site of many public educational programs throughout the year. Collaborative programs with the local public schools, such as Super Summer and Mindscape, offer area children enriched learning opportunities.

Twelve parks are managed by the City of Huntington. Their attractions include ball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, play equipment, and picnic areas. Many area residents enjoy the floral beauty of the Sunken Gardens, created in 1929 from a small lime quarry. Lake Clare, on Huntington’s east side, is a popular recreational site for county residents.

Athletic teams are organized for children and adults by the Parks and Recreation Department, the Police Athletic League, Huntington County Baseball, the YMCA, and other community groups. In addition, Huntington University makes its impressive 80,000 square foot athletic facility available to the general public.
