"Welcome Home ... to Downtown Huntington, Indiana" is a local initiative to begin the process of establishing a downtown revitalization plan for our community. In years past a number of documents have been created by an equal number of organizations, some of which could be called plans and other studies, all providing information that will be looked at for this process. This planning process takes time, but preparing the documents locally we ensure that we will have a usable document that will not just wind up on a shelf in some office collecting dust. This will be a document that will be referred to in making future planning and development decisions within the downtown community. This will be a document that will provide the necessary background to make Downtown Huntington the heart of Huntington once again.
The following are the first of many surveys to follow to gather the necessary information to make this planning process successful. The S.W.a.T. (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) portion will serve as the basic building blocks for future surveys as well as providing the background for future 'hot topic discussions' that will be needed to make the downtown revitalization plan a document that everyone can take ownership in. Following the s.w.a.T. is a map ofthe downtown area that I ask you to mark up with thoughts and ideas. The most important thought that I seek though is what do you feel are the boundaries of our downtown? Does your vision of downtown include just business? Or does it also include the neighboring residences?
If you need additional surveys and/or maps, or if you have thoughts about the downtown revitalization process, please contact me. My contact information is below. As Mark Wickersham, Executive Director of HCUED told me the other day, Huntington's Downtown is open for business.
