Steve Mason Named 41st Chief
of the Flint Springs Tribe
Thursday morning at the LaFontaine Golf Course Banquet Hall, Steve Mason was named the 2009 Chief of the Flint Springs Tribe. He then officially kicked off the Huntington Heritage Days with the proclamation, “... let the Games begin!”
2008 Chief Ryan Warner of Bippus State Bank presented the nomination letter to the assembled crowd of more than 100. Steve moved to Huntington in 1978 with his wife, Jenny, to work with Orin Fouts and John Sunderman at Insurance Services, now IMG (Insurance Management Group) Insurance Services. In his time in Huntington Steve has been involved in several community activities including the Boys and Girls Club, Youth Services, Optimist Club and many more community service projects. However, no project has been closer to his heart than a concentrated effort to prevent teenage drinking and driving.
The loss of his son, Mace, a few years ago prompted the Mason’s to produce a video, “Regret,” that detailed the time immediately preceding a horrific traffic accident that claimed their son and the time immediately after. Their presentation has been seen by thousands of high school students in state around the United States. If just one life has been spared by rethinking the consequences of their actions then the work has been worth it for the Mason’s.
Mike Perkins, Parkview Huntington Hospital Foundation Director, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the breakfast. Huntington Mayor Steve Updike led the Pledge of Allegiance while Father Ron Rieder, Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, offered the blessing for the morning.
